The Sarracenia, commonly known as the trumpet pitcher, is a genus of carnivorous plants native to the United States and Canada. These remarkable plants boast a stunning array of appearances, ranging from the low-growing Sarracenia psittacina to the impressive Sarracenia leucophylla.
When you receive your live carnivorous plant, it will be shipped with its roots carefully wrapped in long-fibered sphagnum. If you have selected the potted option, your plant will arrive in a 2.5-inch plastic container that is safe for carnivorous plants.
Sarracenias thrive in environments that provide them with sunny summers and winters that do not drop below freezing. They flourish in bog gardens and terrariums, thriving in the following conditions:
Light: Full sun Soil: Pure peat, peat-sand mix, peat-perlite mix, or long-fiber sphagnum Fertilizing: Do not apply fertilizer. If grown indoors, fill the pitcher with water and drop in bugs, dried bloodworms, or fish food no more than twice a month. Humidity: 50% or higher Water: Keep the plant wet at all times, using water that is low in salts and minerals, such as rain or distilled water. Temperature: 45-90°F, with the ability to tolerate 20°F in the winter and 0°F if grown in the ground. Dormancy: The plant will enter a dormant period during the winter.
The plant you receive will have pitchers that are about as long as they will get, typically around 18 inches, depending on the variety.
One of the fascinating features of the Sarracenia is its ability to attract insects through a lovely patch of sweet nectar located at the base of the lid. Insects are drawn to this nectar and are encouraged by tiny downward-facing hairs to move down into the pitcher. At some point, the insect loses its footing and falls down the tube, where it is slowly converted into plant food through the process of digestion by enzymes and bacteria.
